Mulberry

Brand

Mulberry is a luxury lifestyle brand founded in 1971 by Roger Saul and his mother, Joan. Originally recognised for its British leather goods–notably poacher bags–the brand branched out to jewellery, fashion and accessories in 2000 under the helm of creative director, Scott Henshall. Henshall rebranded the company and oversaw campaigns; under his tenure, Anna Friel would become the face of Mulberry, and the brand would be seen on the likes of Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Victoria Beckham.

Henshall departed in 2001, and in 2007 Emma Hill was appointed his successor. Under her direction, the extremely popular Alexa, Daria and Mitzy bags were created. Hill frequently took inspiration from Mulberry’s archive, incorporating the brand’s heritage, and establishing the company as a fashion forward luxury house.

Hill’s departure in 2013 was followed by the 2015 appointment of creative director Johnny Coca. Coca heads up Mulberry’s design team for leather goods, as well as all other creative aspects of the brand. Coca’s direction has focused on a polished and wearable military style that’s seen in his outerwear and handbag designs – a subtle masculinity that has paved the way for the brand's new creative path.

In February 2020, chief executive of Sports Direct Mike Ashley's Frasers Group bought a 12.5% share in Mulberry.
