Schiaparelli

Designer

The house of Schiaparelli was founded by its namesake Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1927. Schiaparelli was most known for her surrealist fashion designs and accessories during the thirties. By 1935, the house was a leader in haute couture, expanding into jewellery, perfume, cosmetics, lingerie, and swimsuits. Known for flamboyant colours and for combining eccentricity with simplicity, in 1947 Schiaparelli introduced the famous shocking pink colour that is still associated with her today.

During World War II, Schiaparelli escaped to New York, opening a branch in the US in 1949 to mass-produce suits, dresses, and coats. She was instrumental in the worldwide commercialisation of Parisian fashion, along with Christian Dior. After the war, Schiaparelli struggled to adapt her designs to the post-war climate, and ultimately closed the house in 1954.

In 2007, Italian businessman Diego Della Valle acquired the brand, and the Paris-based couture house was revived in 2013 when Marco Zanini was appointed creative director. In 2019, Daniel Roseberry was appointed creative director.
