The leading global platform connecting collectors, galleries, and artists, Art Basel Miami Beach 2021, touches down tomorrow. One of the most anticipated sights to behold is set to be Mason Rothchild's MetaBirkins collection. Reimagining the Hermès Birkin bag as non-fungible tokens (NFT), following the Baby Birkin which sold for the equivalent of $23,500 (5.5 ethereum) earlier this year, 16 new designs are inspired by the acceleration of fashion's 'fur free' initiatives.
When the question of 'is fashion art' is thrown around, comparing the collectable price of one-off works of art with the ever-elusive Birkin go hand-in-hand. Both only go up in value after being bought, along with establishing a higher net worth for their lucky owner. The Hermès Birkin bag is notoriously hard to get hold of, and have perpetually been seen as collectable luxury items, hanging off the arms of fashion's most glamorous stars and socialites alike. They don't just come with an intimidating price tag but an equally fierce waitlist, only adding to their extreme scarcity. As the holy grail of fashion accessories, it's little wonder that Rothschild has chosen to revisit the bag. Already valued as an IRL investment, the Birkin makes for the perfect collectable item in the world of NFTs which has engulfed the fashion and art worlds alike.
MetaBirkins is a collection of 100 unique Birkin NFTs created with faux fur - and pay tribute to the original Hermès design, however are not officially associated.
They go on sale Thursday 2 December, 18:00 PST, selling for 0.1 ETH.
