Words like artisanal and craft get thrown around a lot these days. With fast fashion effortlessly replicating runway styles with impressive immediacy, it seems heritage brands in the last decade have been keen to differentiate themselves by utilising the biggest tool in their arsenal; their ateliers. From craft-oriented initiatives to meeting the artisans behind iconic designs, brands have been using their platforms to showcase the behind-the-scenes work of their biggest luxury items. As Fendi recently opened its factory in Capannucia, Italy, there wasn’t a better time to take a tour.

The Making of the Peekaboo

The Italian brand invited the editor-in-chief of Perfect Magazine Bryan Yambao (better known as Bryan Boy) to tour the newly opened factory. A certified bagaholic himself, Fendi even showed him how they make their iconic Peekaboo bag. First introduced in 2008, the minimal design by Silvia Venturini Fendi quickly became an it-bag with its mid-century-inspired silhouette and functional turn-lock fastening. Of course, it’s not all business as one of the favourite facets of the design is the drooped flap that mirrors a smile when the bag is left open. Already a bag expert, Bryan Boy is no stranger to the OG Peekaboo design, so to up the ante Fendi showed him all the steps that go into their special interlaced leather model.

The behind-the-scenes look at Fendi's craftsmanship follows the news that the brand is headed to Florence as Pitti Uomo's guest designer come June. The show itself will be held the Fendi factory with the brand revealing the collection will take inspiration from their local community of artisans.
