Virgil Abloh's latest menswear capsule collection for Louis Vuitton is designed for the urban dweller – but with a twist. Taking inspiration from a greetings card written in 1914 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton, featuring an expressionist bouquet of flowers against a checkerboard background, the A/W 21 collection takes the checkerboard as its central motif: printed on a leather Keepalls and Sirius briefcases, the checkerboard print is also spread across a double denim look, and is even imprinted on soft nylon outerwear.

Gaston-Louis Vuitton (1883- 1970) was the grandchild of luxury trunk maker, Louis Vuitton, and ran the French company for more than 50 years. He was a creative man, with an alarming amount of hobbies: designing furniture, sketching landscapes, taking photographs, and collecting art – ranging from African masks to Art Deco crystal. It's no wonder that Abloh – the ultimate Renaissance man – took inspiration for his new collection from such a polymathic figure.

The Fall capsule collection will be available in Louis Vuitton stores from 4 September 2021.
