A monochromatic Cher stares into the middle distance, locks of ebony hair flowing around her in an artificial breeze. Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, this is the suitably dramatic new campaign image for DSquared2's S/S 20 campaign.

Brand founders Dan and Dean Caten unveiled the new campaign image via Instagram on Tuesday (4 Feb 2020). Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, DSquared2 is known for its pop-rock aesthetic and has become synonymous with dressing dynamo singers from Madonna to Beyoncé, who famously collaborated with the brand on costumes for her Formation tour in 2016.

Continuing their cross-pollination with the music industry, the designer duo behind the label have also celebrated their silver anniversary by inviting Sister Sledge to perform at their S/S 20 runway show in Milan. As the OG pop diva however, Cher’s appearance in a campaign feels suitable celebratory.

In an off-the-shoulder jumper, the word ‘ICON’ is emblazoned across the 73 year old singer's upper body, like the blue sash of royalty, as she models a look from the new collection. Her Benjamin Button-esque genetics have been further amplified by hair stylist Serena Radaelli and make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench. Despite the glamour however, creative director Giovanni Bianco has pared it down to basics, allowing Cher’s regality to counteract an ordinarily austere studio backdrop.
