Anthony Vaccarello has wholeheartedly embraced the medium of fashion film during his tenure as creative director of Saint Laurent. Having already enlisted Gaspar Noé, Bret Easton Ellis and Wong Kar Wai to orchestrate filmic content for the luxury French house, Vaccarello's latest commission is from Jim Jarmusch. The American director has been a vocal supporter of independent cinema since the 1980s, having directed films including Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Night on Earth (1992) and more recently, The Dead Don't Die (2019).
Jarmusch's eight-minute fashion film for Saint Laurent, entitled French Water, features Chloë Sevigny and Julianne Moore strolling around a post-party venue in glamorous attire, looking for Indya Moore. All of the actresses play themselves and call each other by their real names. Charlotte Gainsbourg also appears, smashing glasses, dancing, or guzzling wine straight from the bottle. All the action is seen through the eyes of a bemused waiter, played by TikTok star Leo Reilly.
In January, Vaccarello commissioned Gaspar Noé to direct SUMMER OF ‘21, another eight-minute film featuring Charlotte Rampling, Anok Yai and Mica Arganaraz. The house's former SELF project invited directors to 'convey many different facets of the Saint Laurent attitude' through the medium of film. Although this project has since drawn to a close, Vaccarello is still hell-bent on commissioning some of the most exciting feature film directors of the 21st century, all in the name of fashion film.
