Dunhill’s creative director Mark Weston has been steadily revamping dunhill identity, bringing his take on modern yet luxurious elements to the table. As the S/S 20 collection launches, the brand announces a collaboration with the Tokyo-based digital artist, Kenta Cobayashi.

Cobayashi is known for his use of distortion, and his work is characterised by digital manipulation of images, in particular drawing inspiration from the changing landscape of Tokyo and its constantly expanding art scene. For their collaboration, Weston handpicked four dunhill archive images for Cobayashi to rework, selecting them for their captivating graphical and abstract composition. The reworked images have been applied to prints to selected outerwear, tailoring, casual wear and leather goods. Earthy tones, geometrical gold lines and deep reds expand like veins in fabric, creating an interesting, contemporary silhouette.

'I really believe in collaboration. I like the way things unfold when you are working with someone else that you respect. It is how the conversations around the subject take place that interests me. I had really been taken by Kenta’s work a couple of years ago and I was just waiting for the right time to ask him to work with me,' stated Weston. 'In a sense, the whole digital field has become much more appealing – I love the idea of "digital crafting." The way Kenta’s work utilises distortion really struck a chord with me for this collection,' he continued.

Weston has proved through his initiatives and collection that his idea of dunhill man is not singular but multiple. He aims to create a visual vocabulary that corresponds to different men and lifestyles, and that is something that takes form through collaborations such this one. In the fashion industry we often see collaborations between brands and artists of all manner of fields, from sculptors and surreal painters to abstract artists and digital creatives. The match between something concrete (like clothing) and something so fluid (like digital art) can create an unforeseen synthesis full of surprises - and we are up for it!
