Erykah Badu Is Kickstarting The Era Of Marni Maximalism
Erykah Badu has always been a fashion girl. Since the American musician first hit the scene with her 1997 debut single On & On, she’s had a soulful yet eccentric look to match her sound. With signature statement hats, no shortage of rings and necklaces, and flowy, bohemian silhouettes, for decades Badu has been a certified style icon. This status was made official in March when Badu graced her very first American Vogue cover. So, who did the trendsetter decide on wearing for the prestigious honour? Herself of course. At least, herself with a little help from Marni.
Swapping out the mic for sewing shears, Badu teamed up with Marni’s creative director Francesco Risso on an exclusive capsule collection (as well as a custom patchwork gown for Badu's Met Gala look last year). Finding common ground in their love of the ecclectic and maximalist, the duo's collection is just the latest drop from MARNI JAM. The innovative program sees the brand teaming up with creatives across disciplines, with the Italian brand previously working with Carhartt WIP.
Badu and Marni’s limited-edition capsule collection for A/W 23 captures the dynamic and experimental nature of the singer-songwriter. Fit for the eccentric superstar, the collection similarly features hand-made leather patchwork, rich velvets, oversized sequins, and dense wools. The clash of texture and colour aptly represents both creatives' aesthetics.
Never a minimalist, Badu's collection for the brand features no shortage of accessories. With her fondness for stacking trinkets, the musician was sure to include bracelets, armlets, tiaras, necklaces and earrings. Adorned with crystals and gems, the costume jewels are perfect on their own or piled high if you're looking to embody Badu's maximalist look.
The Erykah Badu and Marni collection is available in Marni stores across the US now with a European release coming soon.
