Fashion Journalist Hilary Alexander Has Died Aged 77
When it comes to London’s prolific fashion journalists, Hilary Alexander is one of the originals. In sad news, it’s been announced today that the former fashion director of The Daily Telegraph has died on Sunday, 5 February 2023. The instantly recognisable critic was best known for her support and coverage of London’s emerging designers. Originally from New Zealand, Alexander moved to the UK in 1982 where she took a position at The Daily Telegraph, quickly becoming a fashion show fixture. She was named Journalist of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 1997 and 2003.
During her 26 years at the publication, she captivated with her wit and immense fashion knowledge and was an avid supporter of the city's emerging talents including Lee Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald and Richard Quinn. Alexander’s championing of young designers led to her becoming the Honorary President of the Graduate Fashion Foundation and was a trustee on the charity board. In these roles, she helped grow the event to its current status as the largest showcase of BA fashion in the world.
With her immense experience in broadcast television, Alexander was a frequent SHOWstudio contributor lending her immense knowledge and experience to countless Live Panel Discussions.
