Fashion Reimagined Is The Documentary Urging For A More Sustainable Industry
‘It’s complete nonsense’, says fashion designer Amy Powney in the trailer for Fashion Reimagined. It’s the creative director of the cult label Mother of Pearl’s response to the amount of pollution the fashion industry creates every day. Understanding that change can’t come fast enough, Powney set out on a three-year journey to create a sustainable collection with film director Beck Hutner, who approached Powney after meeting at the Vogue Fashion Prize.
The documentary delves into Powney’s upbringing in rural England and being raised by activist parents which inspired her own journey towards a more sustainable fashion industry. In 2017 when she won the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund she used the cash prize to adopt more sustainable practices into her work. This meant sourcing materials like wool from British farmers, ensuring traceability at every step, and producing on a smaller scale.
Setting out to reinvent the fashion industry, the pioneer in sustainable fashion has showcased her collections as part of London Fashion Week and Copenhagen Fashion Week. In order to reframe how we consume fashion she has previously partnered up with the UK's largest department store, John Lewis, on a sustainable collection including homewares. She has also collaborated on projects with BBC Earth and King Charles in order to urge the public to adopt more sustainable practices.
