While there is no shortage of excitement around the World Cup, the grey cloud over the festivities is that of the countless deaths and injuries of migrant workers in Qatar. Since it was announced in 2010 that Qatar would host the World Cup, it's been revealed that more than 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have died as the nation began a series of building projects in preparation for the tournament.
Groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have both shared plans with FIFA to begin compensating migrant workers and their families, yet the football organisation has yet to fullfill any solutions. Looking to take matters into his own hands, while putting the spotlight on these human rights violations, Joe Hunter of JoeVexxed has created a series of t-shirts modelled after the official England kit from the 2006 World Cup.
Created with HIT And RUN — a clothing platform challenging fast fashion with it’s transparent and ethical supply chain — the limited run series of t-shirts dubbed Human 2 was created with fair wages and safe working conditions in mind. Split into three different styles that mirror England’s official uniform, each design is laser etched before being hand pressed by Hunter. Transforming the instantly recognisable style into a badge of protest, all the styles are stamped with a signed COA England badge print to highlight that football is for everyone and not the privileged few.
Priced at £114.95 (to match the mass produced England Home Match Shirt), Human 2 kit is available now at hitandrun.ltd with 10% of proceeds being donated to Amnesty International.
