As the fourth iteration of Hyundai’s Re:Style initiative, Jeremy Scott has been tasked to create a collection using discarded materials.
Looking to do good for the environment, Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motors launched their Re:Style initiative in 2019. The eco-conscious platform saw designers from around the world create collections using discarded materials from Hyundai’s automotive manufacturers. This year it’s American designer Jeremy Scott who will be upcycling Hyundai’s electric vehicles into a collection of couture garments.
Scott’s car couture will be presented as part of the Hyundai Re:Style exhibition which opens in Korea on 23 March as part of the global launch of the all-new KONA Electric. Along with the designer’s creations, the exhibition will also showcase a collaboration with the model Lauren Wasser. After overcoming a double leg amputation caused by toxic shock syndrome, Hyundai chose the model as their ideal ambassador to represent the past three years of Re:Style. Under the theme of diversity and innovation, Wasser will be modelling the initiative's archival collections showcasing its journey.
Known for his campy creations, Jeremy Scott is no stranger to getting crafty with unconventional materials. Formerly creative director of Moschino, Scott revolutionised the brand with his playful collections inspired by pop-culture icons like Barbie and McDonald's. For S/S 23, Scott created uptown-inspired looks from poolside inflatables, so it shouldn't have been too much for the creative mastermind to use materials derived from wheels, seatbelts, tail lights and windshield wipers.
