After being in the works for nearly a decade, Ridley Scott will finally be directing a portrayal of the sordid murder of Guccio Gucci’s grandson Maurizio Gucci at the (hired) hands of his ex-wife, starring none other than Italian-American polymath Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga.
Gaga, who has proved her acting talents over the years with her role in American Horror Story: Hotel as The Countess and most recently in A Star is Born, for which she received an Academy Award nomination, was announced over the weekend to have filled the role of the infamous Black Widow. The film follows the story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci who spearheaded the Italian fashion house until his murder in 1995. After 12 years of marriage, Gucci left his wealthy Italian socialite wife, Patricia Reggiani, in 1985 for a younger woman, and 10 years later she would have her revenge. Feeling embarrassed and betrayed, Reggiani hired a hit-man to assassinate her ex-husband outside his office, earning her the nickname The Black Widow.
After being caught, Reggiani was the object of a scandalous trial closely followed by the Italian public in 1998, being sentenced to 29 years in prison. Throughout her stead, her daughters made claims that a brain tumour had affected her behaviour in the hopes of an overturned conviction, and in 2016 after serving 18 years, she was released.
Written by Roberto Bentivegna, the script has been based on Sara Gay Forden’s book ‘The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed’, with the film produced by Ridley Scott, with Giannina Scott and his Scott Free Productions.
