British heritage Mulberry has joined forces with Acne Studios for a surprising collaboration that sees the pair release a 17 piece accessory collection. Produced in Mulberry's rural Somerset factory, the ‘Friendship’ collection of bags and small leather goods merges Acne's Scandi-cool aesthetic with Mulberry's craftsmanship and expertise in leather products.
'This is a collection about friendship and our freedom as brands to do what we want to do. It is like a conversation between Acne Studios and Mulberry, one that is founded in mutual respect and a desire to make great product.' says Acne Studios' creative director Jonny Johansson.
In the 00s, Mulberry was known as the purveyor of it-bags, including the near-ubiquitous Bayswater, Roxanne and Alexa. After creative director Emma Hill left, she was replaced by Johnny Coca in 2015, who has reiterated the brand's luxury credentials, and in doing so, pushed price points higher. Acne Studios, too, has developed a cult following for its jeans and cerebral design, and its pink shopping bags arguably helped precipitate the omnipresence of 'millennial pink' over the last five years.
Mixing Swedish design with English charm, the capsule includes bags, laptop cases, zip purses and lanyards in a classic leather grain. The limited edition capsule launched 5th November and offers a range of designs including Mulberry's satchel style Messenger bag in Acne's signature shade of salmon-pink colour. Another design featured is a micro sized version of the Mulberry Bayswater with Acne's iconic twisted knot design. The bags come with adjustable leather shoulder strap embossed with Acne Studios & Mulberry branding. Pouches in grained leather with framed with brown leather piping and featuring a newly created Acne x Mulberry logo are also included in the drop.
