Nick Cave's Treasury 'Cave Things' Launches At Dover Street Market
Unlike Pete Doherty's infamous Camden Boutique - one that claimed to possess an ashtray filled with Kate Moss' very own cigarette butts - Nick Cave's glorious Cave Things celebrates the more personal side of the banal. Acting as an ode to random Cave memorabilia, the collection's newly launched Dover Street Market shop space is an exploratory cabinet of curiosities in its own right.
Cave noted in a statement: 'I'm delighted to bring the strange and beautiful world of Cave Things to Dover Street Market in London, and I hope people will discover something to treasure in amongst this disparate collection of objects, clothing and other things I've designed - all very dear to me in their own way.'
First launched in 2020, the collection is as mysterious as it is charming, containing anything and everything, including an array of apparel, books, homeware, prints and limited edition recordings, as well as new Cave Things products exclusive to Dover Street Market, all treated with the same touching Cave flair that's flung the star to musical success. Details are everything here, with the singer-songwriter-turned-shopkeeper individually adding a name, personalised title and date-stamp to all his polaroids before glueing them together to sell; 'it's the obsessive and dangerous end of granny-core' Cave told the Financial Times of his new endeavours when he went live with the site during the pandemic.
Designed as a fusion between intimate residence and shop, the idiosyncratic space is the first ever dedicated Cave Things destination, with Cave's own involvement as strong as ever. From concept to creation, Cave's had his hand in it all throughout the journey of Cave things, while the special Cave touch and full autonomy has meant the star has adhered to strict guidelines with what he's decided to include in the DSM space. 'I have wanted to make a real-life shop since Cave Things was born as a website in 2020, and nowhere could be better than DSM to host this curious little installation, which I have designed and curated with a bit of help from my wife, Susie (Bick)' Cave told SHOWstudio.
It would be easy to look at the Cave Things space as a money-making scheme, existing purely for commercial reasons. But, as Cave fans will know, this isn't the case. Far from it infact. The artist has always been driven by the search for meaning in everything he does; after all, this is the man who decided to publicly share his grief with his fans over the death of his fifteen-year-old son Arthur Cave in the poignant documentary One More Time With Feeling which was followed with the project the Red Hand Files two years later, which saw Cave answer questions probed by his fans on the platform; a sort of Reddit-inspired thread for the Nick Cave fandom.
Cave Things will arrive at Dover Street Market on 17 March. To celebrate, there will also be a book signing event with Nick Cave on 19 March.
