After 70 years on the throne, HM Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her Scottish estate Balmoral Castle earlier today.

It has been announced HM Queen Elizabeth II has died, surrounded by members of her family at Balmoral Castle.

Having ruled longer than any other British Monarch in history, it was only some months ago in June that the nation celebrated Her Majesty's 70-year reign in a weekend marked with countless celebrations up and down the country.

The Queen succeeded her father George VI to the throne when she was just 25 on 6 February 1952, followed by a coronation ceremony 16 months later. Her time on the throne has seen her served by 15 Prime Ministers, starting with Conservative Winston Churchill and ending with the recently appointed Liz Truss, (who only arrived in 10 Downing Street yesterday). Queen Elizabeth II also witnessed a total of 14 Presidents during her time on the throne, 13 of whom she met.

In 2010, SHOWstudio founder Nick Knight was awarded an OBE and in 2016, Knight photographed the Queen to mark her 90th birthday celebrations; the official portrait saw the Queen seated in Windsor Castle's White Drawing Room with her eldest son and future King, Prince Charles. Knight gave a statement at the time in which he professed, 'It was a great pleasure and an honour to photograph Her Majesty the Queen and the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle. I wanted to create a modern portrait that showed warmth and humanity as well as strength and tradition.'

HM Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96, is survived by her four children Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
