For artists and designers alike, the creative process is often chaotic yet introspective. That’s definitely the case for designer and artist Nicole Zisman who is giving us an in-depth exploration of her creative process with her first limited edition art book NICOLE ZISMAN: Artist Book I. Working across fashion, sculpture, print and moving image, Zisman’s work addresses everything from identity and assimilation to the contemporary tensions between physical and digital culture. Now this cross-disciplinary approach is being documented through a collection of photographs housed in this extremely limited edition.
After completing her BA in Fashion Print from Central Saint Martins in 2019, the multi-hyphenate creative founded her eponymous label, Zisman, and has been featured in Dazed, LOVE , The Face, and Vogue Italia. A frequent collaborator with Feminist Internet, for Zisman identity is at the core of her creative output. Weaving her Jewish heritage into her work, the Venezuelan designer previously explored her identity with a solo exhibition יהי רצון / So Let It Be Your Will, hosted by Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Waltham Forest, London Borough of Culture 2019.
For Zisman being able to explore a variety of topics across disciplines could only happen in London. 'One thing I’ve always found so special about the London fashion scene is its celebration and tolerance of the multidisciplinary and its rejection of obsessive categorisation of a piece of work. The art world is catching up a bit, but I feel it still has ways to go,' Zisman told us. 'It’s very much up to emerging artists to carve out that space for themselves and prove that work that can live in more than one world has both financial and cultural merit.'
In the first published collection of her work, this book invites readers inside her world from 2018-2022. A collection of editorial images, exhibitions, and collaborations, the chronological work provides insight in the role that identity plays in the designers work. From Zisman's formative years working in the Viktor & Rolf ateliers, to curating her first solo exhibition, the book follows the designer's ever evolving creative process.
