When it comes to innovative publications A Magazine Curated By should be at the top of every fashion fanatics list. While Dan Thawley is the publications editor-in-chief, unlike traditional magazines the cult-favourite book enlists a new designer to edit every issue. From Martin Margiela to Graces Wales Bonner, each issue becomes a deeply personal look inside the psyches of fashion’s biggest creative forces. For their 25th issue, founder and creative director of sacai, Chitose Abe, will present an intimate look into her world.
The Japanese label has cultivated no shortage of fans around the world thanks to Abe’s knack for hybridisation. A study in juxtaposition, the brand is known for its use of contrasting textures and experimental silhouettes that play with tailoring and utilitarianwear. Not only will the issue offer a look inside Abe’s creative process but also at the creative relationships behind the success of sacai.
An exploration of Abe’s inner circle, the issue (which is set to span over 200 pages) is packed with portraits of her inner circle, including friends, family and artistic collaborators. The issue opens with an unprecedented interview with Abe and sacai’s creative advisor Daisuke Gemma by Tokyo-based counsellor Josephine Creighton. Not a traditional profile, the interview promises to examine the pair’s creative and professional relationship from a psychological perspective.
Without spoiling the entire issue, there is no shortage of big name contributors including Hans Ulrich Obrist, Craig McDean, and New York based collective Ghetto Gastro who recently collaborated with sacai on a capsule collection. While it's the interviews that are sure to attract sacai super fans, the royal blue cover stamped with English and Japanese text makes it the perfect addition to any coffee table.
