Steven Meisel 'made me feel the most beautiful', supermodel Kristen McMenamy told SHOWstudio back in 2014 as part of our Subjective video series. The fashion photographer's work is central to both the fashion history books and contemporary fashion image-making. His vast influence spreads from the covers of American and Italian Vogue, the latter of which he held monopoly over for over two decades, to defining brand campaigns for Valentino, Versace, Prada and many more. Now, he's releasing a collection with Zara as a love letter to the city and muses who have helped to define him.
Steven Meisel New York is an ode to 26 muses and Meiseil's hometown of the Big Apple. Model supers including Amber Valletta, who was a defining force in Meisel's Versace campaigns, Penelope Tree, Eva Herzigova and Irina Shayk, together with Meisel's Vogue Italia cover boy Ash Stymest front the series of black and white portraits which accompany the collection.
As she makes her return to the spotlight, supermodel Linda Evangelista also stars in the Steven Meisel New York campaign alongside a new generation of icons including Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Scott Barnhill and Alton Mason. Proposing these muses and models as different faces to represent Meisel, the campaign was styled by Karl Templer, with hairstylist Guido Palau and make-up artist Pat McGrath also coming on board. Steven Meisel New York is a personal project underpinned by the concept of collaboration and Meisel's extended fashion family.
Having photographed numerous Zara stories, this is the first time Meisel has worked on a fashion collection for the global retailer, directly inspired by the image-maker's dark and seductive aesthetic and personal style. The women's and men's collection includes both clothing and accessories, threaded through the lens of Americana and rock'n'roll bad boy; defining features of Meisel's wardrobe.
Think heavy servings of black, denim, leather and plaid. Key pieces include a branded bandana, black leather engineer boots and trapper hat, together with laced-crotch trousers, a leather shirt and hoodies. There's clear references to the periods which have influenced the fashion icon and defined his tenure, including a croc-printed coat and faux fur number which make reference to the 1960s, whilst a plaid shirt and striped knit jumper nod to nineties grunge - echoing the iconic 1992 image of McMenamy and Naomi Campbell. Elsewhere, t-shirts reference Meisel's own early fashion illustrations, again reflecting the broad creative spectrum of the legend that is Steven Meisel.
The Steven Meisel New York Zara collection will be available online and in selected stores from 18 September 2023, following a series of launch events including one at Dover Street Market London hosted by Meisel and his muses aligning with pop-up stores launching in New York and London between 9-17 September.
