South African designer Thebe Magugu wins LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designer and will receive €300,000 in funding and a year long mentorship.

LVMH announced Thebe Magugu as the winner of the 2019 Prize for Young Fashion Designer. The 26-year-old is the first African designer to win the prize since its inception 6 years ago. Magugu will receive a grant of €300,000 and a year-long mentorship from LVMH. Alicia Vikander, an LVMH ambassador, presented Magugu, the youngest designer of the 2019 selection, with his award.

Magugu founded his namesake brand in 2017 after studying at the LISOF School of Fashion in Johannesburg, South Africa. On winning the award, he said: 'I can’t say this has been two years in the making: this has been in the making since grade four.'

During the ceremony, LVMH announced Hed Mayner as the winner of the Karl Lagerfeld Prize – a newly conceived award. Mayner will receive €150,000 in funding and a year-long mentorship from the LVMH.

The winners were whittled down from over 1,700 entries, from 100 countries. Congratulations Magugu and Mayner!
