Theory Project Introduces Its First Trainer
When Theory was established in 1997, the New York City brand quickly found its niche with its sharp, minimal tailoring. With the urban uniform in mind, they've built a business on expertly crafting wardrobe staples for any and all occasions and while the classics are important, the brand hopes to revitalise their signature styles with Theory Project. Making his debut for Fall 2022, Paris based designer Lucas Ossendrijver is following up with a collection inspired by movement and NYC’s dynamic energy.
The Spring 2023 capsule collection plays on the brand’s minimalism while capturing the city’s on-the-go sensibilities. A mix of tailoring and sportswear, Ossendrijver reimagines signature styles in fluid fabrics with subtle utilitarian details. While the brand has become synonymous with a muted colour palette of blacks, greys and navy, Ossendrijver introduces playful hues with pops of blue, violet and ruby.
The capsule collection also marks the introduction of Theory’s first trainer. With form and function in mind, the sleek low-top silhouette animates the capsule collection with reflective detailing and a heavy-duty rubberised sole making them the perfect kicks for the urban explorer.
‘There’s a fantasy in design, but ultimately it needs to be functional and purposeful,’ explains Ossendrijver. ‘This collection was designed with a laser focus on the wearer and their lifestyle. Even though Theory Project is a small capsule, it has to serve everybody. That’s why you have options.'
When it comes to high fashion trainers, Ossendrijver is something of an expert. The Dutch designer was formerly director of menswear at Lanvin for 14 years before exiting the maison in 2018. While luxury trainers are a dime a dozen these days, Ossendrijver would help usher in fashion’s fascination with trainers with the introduction of the maison’s signature patent toe-capped low-tops.
