Polymathic artist, architect, engineer, creative director, and fashion designer Virgil Abloh has once again joined forces with Mercedes-Benz on an Mercedes Maybach electric show car. Unveiled on 1 December 2021 to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, the aim is to steer the Maybach legacy into the the cultural zeitgeist – and who better to take the reins than the Off-White founder and creative director?
'The Maybach legacy celebrates exploration, pushing creativity to new places, living outside of the status quo. In this next phase we’re embracing these ideals and bringing the Mercedes-Maybach heritage into the future, inviting the next generation to join in revering this icon,' says Abloh. 'Together we’re entering a new age of discovery.' Details of the design have not yet been revealed, but with Abloh's background in civil engineering and architecture, we can guess that he'll strike the perfect balance between form and function.
And judging by his first collaboration with Mercedes-Benz for Project Geländewagen last year, which saw Abloh design a one-of-a-kind silver maquette car made of synthetic resin, laminate, carbon fiber, glass fiber, wood, metal, textile, this year's design will be sure to push the boundaries between art and commerce even further.
