The Chinese director presents 'A Night in Shanghai', part of Saint Laurent's SELF project of creative collaborations.

For the fifth chapter of Saint Laurent’s SELF project, Chinese artist and director Wong Kar Wai presents A Night in Shanghai, a new film directed by Wing Shya. A story about introspection, A Night in Shanghai juxtaposes aspects of traditional Shanghai with the contemporary dimension of Saint Laurent, and sees Chinese model Xiao Wen Ju comparing her past and present, trying to find a balance in real life.

'Wong Kar Wai envisions individual feelings; his art is like a vivid dream projected into real life, which emphasizes the contrast between the fragile aspect of humanity and reality. It was a very instinctive process based on mutual respect and admiration, in the movie you can and and feel the Saint Laurent fantasy taking shape as natural consequence,’ said Anthony Vaccarello of the partnership.

So far, the SELF project has seen Saint Laurent collaborate with artists Daido Moriyama and Vanessa Beecroft, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and director Gaspar Noé. Selected by Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello, the creative collaborators' output is intended to reflect the 'many different facets of the Saint Laurent attitude.'

Wong Kar Wai said of Saint Laurent: ‘Saint Laurent is unique, distinctive among high fashion. Anthony loves art and his designs worn gorgeously, and stays independent. Saint Laurent is always about ‘breaking the balance’ in this era, like no one else, the brand is brave in expressing itself.’

The film will be screened exclusively in an immersive installation at Yuz Museum in the Shanghai art district, open to the public from 22 November to 24 November 2019.
