Officially titled Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga, the project will harmonise a crystal clear vision pioneered by two of today's most innovative voices in the creative playing field - Demna and Ye - formerly known as Demna Gvasalia and Kanye West.
The appointment of Demna signals a new direction for the American retailer - one that's already gained a cult following thanks to the musician Ye's signature block-coloured puffer designed for Gap last year, which raked in $7 million in profits despite being sold at a reasonably affordable $200 per jacket.
The move also unveils the next chapter in Demna and Ye's close relationship. Over the last year, Ye and his then-wife Kim Kardashian have been frequently seen sporting Demna's Balenciaga, making it clear the pair champion Demna's vision. And despite their split - made concrete with the recent publication of Julia Fox's piece detailing her and Ye's intimate relationship for Interview Magazine - both Kim and Ye have gone on to hold tight bonds with Demna following their divorce, evidenced by last year's news that Demna was the creative director of the DONDA album release at Mercedes Benz Stadium. If one thing is crystal clear, the pair aren't just contemporaries; they are good friends.
'It is a vision come true to work with Gap and Demna, the creative director of Balenciaga, to make incredible product available to everyone at all times', Ye told Vogue.
One step closer to delivering his utilitarian-inspired dream for all, the collaboration will be available globally in 2022 alongside continued Yeezy Gap releases.
