Iman by Daniel Segrove
“I love this look [Thierry Mugler Couture 99]; if you look at images of black women with natural hair, the clothing choice is usually something ethnic because that’s the immediate connotation. No one thinks of dreadlocks and high fashion being paired together, so when we [photographer Tyen] came up with this look I was thinking of something out of the box, something that would lend a new perspective on what black looks like. I also like the stance, very powerful and daring, sort of like if Medusa or Kali were caught raiding a couturier’s closet and are ready to fight to keep the dress. I remember having so much fun at this shoot and creating this character. That’s what it was back then: we weren’t just being cute, we developed a whole personality.”
