The inimitable John Galliano generously donated the knitting pattern for a never-seen-before jumper, created exclusively for SHOWstudio in house at Maison Margiela. To enjoy it to its full potential, this pattern is best experienced via laptop or desktop.
This unique pattern embodies John Galliano's penchant for storytelling and was designed in the spirit of Recicla (the line and concept created by Galliano wherein the atelier meticulously deconstruct second-hand garments and lease them with new life). Simply take your own pre-existing shirts, bed sheets or tea towels, then rip, cut and tear following the instructions. Download the pattern and see your second-hand fabrics transform in the spirit of Maison Margiela, resulting in your very own jersey stitch ribbon Reclica knit sweater.

A message from John Galliano

Galliano's upcycled crew-neck sweater is made from 13 cotton poplin shirts, found in thrift shops. The striped and plain shirts are ripped vertically to create ribbons with a width of approximately 1- 2cm, before the ribbons are joined to form a ball of yarn, then knitted, creating a textured play of white, blue and dust rose.

Galliano's final jumper is knitted and assembled by hand.
