Fashioning Masculinities: Redressed

published on 8 April 2022

Tailoring has traditionally been used as a sartorial marker of masculinity, which fashion designers have reconstructed over time, as explored in the third and final gallery of the V&A exhibition Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear, 'Redressed'.

Co-curator Claire Wilcox describes three contemporary garments to illustrate how men's suiting has been refashioned; John Galliano for Maison Margiela (S/S 19, look 39), JW Anderson (A/W 13, look 6), and a pink ensemble from Grace Wales Bonner's S/S 15 graduate collection (taken from the Overdressed gallery). Wilcox also looks to fashion history, talking about a 19th century wool suit worn by Beau Brummell, a style icon in Regency England.

Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear runs from 19 March - 6 November, 2022.
