Interview: Kate Phelan, Nick Knight and a Zoom Fashion Shoot

published on 21 October 2020

How do you style a story for Vogue, created entirely over Zoom?

Nick Knight and stylist Kate Phelan talk about creating a fashion shoot virtually for British Vogue’s August 2020 issue. Phelan talks through her creative process, from picking the looks for the models, to sourcing clothes during a global pandemic, and explains why this is an exciting moment for how fashion imagery is produced. Knight and Phelan also discuss virtually directing and styling models of the moment Bella Hadid, Fran Summers, Anok Yai, Jill Kortleve, Ugbad Abdi, Xiao Wen Ju and Abby Champion, and whether the Zoom fashion shoot is here to stay.

‘I’ve always seen fashion as the incentive to get somewhere with a picture...the fashion is there to get the story...It’s about the effect of fashion that I’ve always been interested in. And when we started talking about the Zoom shoot, I think that was one of the most interesting parts to it, was that it was changing what I do.’ Kate Phelan
