published on 11 May 2021

The final day of the online art network's @SHOWstudio Instagram takeover saw artists reflect on the creatives who continue to inspire them daily, from creative maverick and painter Katie Green, to hair artist Peter Savic, whom Mimi Haddon admits that she has a 'daily visual exchange with'.

Which other creatives do you admire / should we know about?

Britt Lloyd contribute.to/brittlloyd

The greats. Obviously Edward Weston, Man Ray and František Drtikol, but all photography is of interest to me. I get drawn to female photographers such as Lee Miller, Imogen Cunningham and Francesca Woodman. There is always a deep emotional contact for me with their work, and I love learning about them as people, and how they approached their photography.

Drag Syndrome contribute.to/dragsyndrome

We are inspired by our artistic patron Robert Wyatt who creates original, incredible albums. He was a drummer with psychedelic bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole and after a terrible accident which left him physically disabled, he recorded one of the greatests albums of all time, Rock Bottom. We also look up to the late drag artist and actor Divine and are currently inspired by Arca, who we are planning a collaboration with after the pandemic is over. Other creatives our artists admire for their boldness and creativity are Lady Gaga, Björk, Róisín Murphy, Tina Turner, Fecal Matter, Jonathan Anderson and Madonna.

Fecal Matter contribute.to/fecalmatter

Legends like Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen inspire us forever. We also love Pete Burns. An artist people should definitely know is dear friend and photographer Szilveszter Makó whose work always amazes us.

Joseph Häxan contribute.to/josephhaxan

I love the Chinese photographer Leslie Zhang (@lesliezhang1992) and the German landscape photographer Heiko Gerlicher (@heiko.gerlicher.treescapes). Tomás Sánchez (@tomassanchezstudio) is an incredible painter. Jake and Dinos Chapman (@jakeanddinos) and Heishiro Ishino (@i.heishiro.artist) are sculptors that I really admire. Hajime Sorayama (@hajimesorayamaofficial) is big but deserves to be bigger, as does Sarah Sitkin (@sarahsitkin).

Metta Modernist contribute.to/mettamodernist

My tribe and brothers JabariCuzzi & Kamaus who own 'BLACKANIME' (@blackanimex). They are the future, past and present. My great friend, and ace, Koza Kurtulus (@kozakurtulusofficial) who owns her self-titled brand, and designs high quality pieces, while redefining silhouettes. My twin and fellow AfroAbsurdists artist Kpierre (@kpierrephoto), a truly thought-provoking artist, every piece he paints is a labyrinth. And one of the most talented stylists I’ve had the pleasure to call a friend, Sami Wavy (@samiwavy), whose eye for layering pieces is cinematic.

Mimi Haddon contribute.to/mimihaddon

Some of my favorite Palace collaborations have been with hair artist, Peter Savic (@peter.savic). He and I have a daily visual exchange that keeps me inspired. He is constantly introducing me to interesting artists and obscure films that I’ve never heard of. We have done 3 or 4 shoots together at The Palace and each time Peter comes up with the most incredible hair sculptures that he uses to cover the dancer’s face. His imagination and talent take the work to a new level. Katie Green (@katiegreenart) is an incredible artist who wore her surreal masks for an amazing Palace moment. Katie created a series of massive murals with people wearing her masks that can be seen throughout her hometown of Calgary, Canada. Another couple who visited The Palace with their creations is Omer Gal (@omergalart) and Jacquelyn Marie Shannon (@ghostinglass). Omer is a stop motion video director and puppeteer and Jacquelyn a performer and ritual artist. Together they brought a series of characters and narratives to life by combining their masks and puppets with The Palace collection. Finally, the dancers with whom I collaborate are the heart and soul of this project. One dancer in particular who is also a fiber artist is Cody Brunelle-Potter (@cpotterp). They have really stepped in as both stylist and mover for many Palace shoots. We think much the same way in terms of working with fiber and clothing to evoke a character or emotion. Some favourite artists: Eva Hesse, Joseph Albers, El Anatsui, Yayoi Kusama, August Sander, Diane Arbus, Graciela Iturbide, Niki de Saint Phalle, Annette Messager, Sarah Lucas, Joseph Beuys, Claude Cahun.

Ozabu contribute.to/ozabu

Itō Jakuchū, Toko Shinoda, Fuyuko Matsui, Hans Bellmer, James Jean and Jeremy Enecio.

Shalva Nikvashvili contribute.to/shalva

My favourite artists are: Louise Bourgeois, Marina Abramović and Agnes Martin (I am very feminist in my art preferences).

Sinéad O’Dwyer contribute.to/sineadodwyer

My partner Ottilie Landmark (@ottilielandmark) is a close collaborator whose photographic work is intimate and arresting. I love the kinky writing of Anastasiia Fedorova (@anastasiia_fedorova) and also Ella Boucht’s (@ellaboucht) hot queer suiting. I am also a big fan of the artist Tenant of Culture (@tenantofculture) and Manan Ter-Grigoryan’s vision for nurturing an environment where fashion artists can operate as contemporary artists through her gallery Waves and Archives (@wavesandarchives).
