Day 2: Zeinab Batchelor

published on 24 October 2020

For Day 2 of Zeinab Batchelor's takeover, the photographer and creative director outlined the body of research behind her work. Sharing family photographs, Batchelor drew parallels with the iconography of photographers Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta.

Focusing on the work of South African artist Zanele Mugoli, Batchelor highlighted the themes of race, gender, sexuality and black bodies which run through both Mugoli's work and her own. Returning to some of her own projects which were first introduced on Day 1 of the takeover, Batchelor expanded upon her research process, referencing posters found in afro hair shops and interviews conducted with friends about their relationships with their hair.
