Gerald Murphy and Pablo Picasso at the Antibes, 1923.
Cover of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Tender is the Night”, whose main characters Dick and Nicole Diver are based (in part) on Gerald and Sara Murphy. In a letter, Gerald wrote: “I know now that what you said in ‘Tender Is the Night’ is true. Only the invented part of our life - the unreal part - has had any scheme, any beauty. Life itself has stepped in now and blundered, scarred and destroyed.”

Gerald Murphy’s costumes and backdrop for “Within the Quota”. The “Within the Quota” ballet was written by Gerald Murphy, playing off of American stereotypes by including Wild West figures and silent movie heroes. He offered his then-unknown friend Cole Porter to write score, which was met with great applause.
Josephine Baker. Like Cole Porter, Josephine Baker found minimal success in the United States, before heading to Paris, where she became a superstar, her exoticism heightened here by wearing a skirt made of bananas, then considered an exotic and rare delicacy.
Gerald Murphy, “Villa America”, 1924. The five stars represent Gerald, Sara, Patrick, Baoth, and Honoria.
