people like to throw around “it-girl,” but i can’t think of many who embody “it” better than ms. de se baby. one of downtown’s most sought-after djs, dese dabbles in art, fashion, and linguistics (once dese coins a phrase you’re almost sure to see a party named after it within 30 days). essential viewing: dese’s alternate instagram, missdesefashionstar, dedicated to her (dangerous!) outfits.

serena jara could emerge as one of the most important (transgender) artists of her generation. the tisch undergrad’s intimate portraits return trans representation to the sister/daughter/motherboard. her subjects clutch a shutter switch; jara’s work is by the girls, for the girls–for a change. after decades of trans exploitation by cisgender artists, i count jara’s work a blessing.
