For day two of her Tumblr takeover, fashion historian Lucy Norris looks back at some creations and inventions from 1915.

In 1915, Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Tramp’ was released in cinemas, Kazimir Malevich painted his ‘Black Square’ and Maurice Levy invented the lipstick barrel. As we celebrate the important centenary of these creations and inventions, the overriding theme here in today’s curation is one of independence. The lipstick barrel allowed flappers to spontaneously apply make up when they were out and about, and meant they were no longer chained to the dressing table. ‘The Tramp’ was about the dehumanising dependence of the Industrial Age on workers, whilst the Black Square was the first time someone made a painting that wasn’t of something.
