If 2024 was to be the year of anything, let fashion documentaries take the lead. From Kevin Macdonald's pensive look at John Galliano's fashion comeback with Margiela in High & Low (screening in cinemas now) to Mubi's latest release which sees the story of Sabato De Sarno as told by Gucci (narrated by brand ambassador and actor Paul Mescal) in a 20-minute short film; 2024 isn't holding its bite where fashion film fanatics are concerned.
Premiering last week on the streaming mecca, Who is Sabato De Sarno? A Gucci Story offers a deep dive and unprecedented glimpse into the creation of the Gucci Ancora fashion show - a pivotal show for multiple reasons, not least because it marked a new chapter in said 'Gucci Story' but also because it was De Sarno's own debut at the house as creative director.
Using never-before-seen footage, the documentary weaves an intimate narrative of the designer's tenure by highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between De Sarno and the Gucci team as well as their collective passion and dedication to a uniquely unbridled creative process. Directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, the film invites audiences to explore the magic behind the curtains while shedding light on De Sarno himself, passions and visions et al.
Coinciding with the arrival of the Gucci Ancora collection in stores, Gucci will also play host to a multitude of screenings happening across major cities around the globe, allowing audiences to experience the short film on the big screen. Come April an enhanced edition of the short film will be available exclusively on Apple Vision Pro and will also be available on all flights thanks to a special partnership with Air France.
