Alex Levac

Photographer

Alex Levac was born in Tel Aviv in 1944. He studied photography at the London College of Printing and became a freelance photographer from 1971-81, working in Brazil, London and Los Angeles. In 1983, he became staff photographer for the daily Hadashot, during which time he became caught up in the Kav 300 affair. This scandal was circulated around a photograph he took during the hijacking of a Tel Aviv bus in 1984 which disproved the official account of events. He began working at the Israeli daily in 1993.
Levac's work concentrates predominantly on the Israeli experience and has been exhibited at numerous notable spaces over his lengthy career, from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem to the Leica Gallery in Prague. He also won the Israel Prize for photography in 2005 and has published five books.
