If you’re anything like us, then the cover of Stardust’s 'Music Sounds Better With You' used in Mugler x H&M’s announcement music video has been on repeat since the clip dropped last month. The high-octane film starring Eartheater, Shygirl, Ammarae, Arca, Jerry Hall and Connie Fleming was an energetic introduction to creative director Casey Cadwallader’s collaboration with the fast fashion behemouth. As a showcase of the upcoming drop, it showcased the accessories, menswear and womenswear we can expect from the one-off collection. And if that didn’t get you anticipation building, the release of today’s look certainly will.
‘This collection is a watershed moment for the house of Mugler – a chance for us to celebrate our history and the pieces that we are beloved for today,’ Cadwallader explains in today’s press release. ‘The collaboration includes many of our signatures, from catsuits and bodycon dresses to tailoring, denim and beautiful, bold jewellery and accessories.’
Defined by the shapes and silhouettes synonymous with Mugler, a quick overview of the collection reveals many looks inspired directly by the mainline. That is, no shortage of cut-out bodysuits, catsuits and illusion leggings. Along with the tried and true staples that Cadwallader has introduced, the collection features razor-sharp tailoring with signature oversized shoulders and a cinched waist for that classic Mugler hourglass silhouette.
Of course, the real showstoppers in the collection are two dresses straight from Thierry Mugler’s archive. Modelled by original Mugler muses Jerry Hall and Connie Fleming, the high-street renditions of the brand’s iconic velvet ‘vampire dress’ first introduced in 1981 and a skirt suit adorned with metallic piercing embellishment is a touching ode to the maison’s founder and is sure to introduce his extensive archive to an entirely new generation of fashion fanatics.
‘Casey and the Mugler team have been incredibly generous in offering up so many of the house’s classics and signatures, which shoppers will recognise from the runway and red carpet’ explains H&M creative advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson. ‘The collection encapsulates the H&M ethos of sharing great fashion and democratising design. Every piece is an icon.’
The Mugler H&M collection will be available at hm.com and in selected stores on May 11.
