Sure, Bally is known for their artisanal leather craftsmanship and more recently the daring designs of freshly appointed creative director Rhuigi Villaseñor but with a nearly two-century history there’s a lot more to the brand than meets the eye. While a leader in the luxury leather market, the Swiss brand (that just so happens to be one of the world’s oldest fashion houses) just so happens to be one of the first to trek to the top of Mount Everest. It’s Bally’s pioneering legacy at the core of the brand’s latest capsule collection.
On 29 May 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary made history as the first to successfully set foot on the summit of Everest. On the expedition, Norgay donned the Swiss brand’s Reindeer-Himalayan boots. Now seven decades later, Bally is celebrating this history and partnering with Norgay’s sons Tenzing, Jamling and Norm Norgay to raise awareness for the preservation of the Himalayas.
'We are honoured to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Everest’s ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, and proud to have been there on the day with Norgay wearing Bally boots to the ‘Roof of the World,’ says Bally CEO Nicolas Girotto.
While an impressive feat worth celebrating in itself, Bally is using the anniversary as a way to make their stance on sustainability loud and clear. In 2020 the brand established The Bally Peak Outlook Foundation as a way to keep Mount Everest clean. Led by climate activist and mountaineer Dawa Steven Sherpa, the Foundation has successfully removed 8.4 tons of waste since it began.
The extremely limited capsule collection includes 70 individually numbered crewnecks adorned with archive-inspired patches and alpine iconography. With 100% of the proceeds going towards the Foundation, the capsule collection will go towards keeping its historic peaks clean.
The capsule collection will be available in select Bally stores and online atBally.comon 27 April.
