Abloh and Mercedes-Benz chief design officer Gorden Wagener's unique take on the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class is unveiled online today.
As we first reported back in July, (find out more here), Mercedes-Benz have teamed up with creative polymath and fashion designer Virgil Abloh on an exclusive art work. Co-designed with Mercedes-Benz chief design officer Gorden Wagener, Project Geländewagen was launched worldwide online today at mercedes-benz.com.
A digital presentation sees the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class reframed in Abloh's unique conceptual vision. Together with Wagener, the designer explains how they stripped back the car's original design to create a blank canvas. Complete with racing car tyres and a Formula 1 style interior, the new design's exterior is finished off with paintwork mirroring the underside of a vehicle. This aesthetic is all about running '...away from the idea of perfection' and redefining luxury, as Abloh explains, later adding in a statement: 'My ultimate goal in this project with Mercedes-Benz is inspiring young artists, engineers, designers to question the status quo, in addition to experimenting with my own design abilities'.
The design with be released in the form of a home-scale replica to be sold in auction this coming October. Proceeds will be donated to a charity supporting the arts and the winning bidder will have exclusive access to co-creators Abloh and Wagener, with the opportunity to learn more about the specific inspirations behind the work.
