Ferragamo Is Reimagining One Of Their Most Iconic Shoes
When Maximillian Davis took creative control of Ferragamo, the industry eagerly anticipated a complete refresh of the historic Italian brand. And why wouldn’t they? Under his own eponymous label, the then-26-year-old Londoner had previously captivated the industry with his refreshinglyly contemporary and sultry designs, leaving many excited about how he would revamp the now nearly-centenarian brand.
Still, Davis’ S/S 23 debut left many pleasantly surprised by just how deep he dug into the archives. With his pre-fall 2023, he took more cues from the brand’s extensive archive and is reviving one of Ferragamo’s most iconic designs, the Rainbow sandal. First introduced in 1938, the platform sandal named for its use of vibrant cushioned stripes, was originally designed for actress Judy Garland. With its sculptural silhouette and bold proportions, the design quickly become one of Ferragamo’s most sought-after styles with the original now considered a collector’s item.
While the original design is just as covetable today, for pre-fall, Davis reimagined the iconic silhouette to fit contemporary wardrobes. His version keeps the exaggerated, rounded platform, wedge, and vibrant colours, only this time in monochromatic styles including green, bubble-gum pink, black, gold, and a scarlet red that is quickly becoming a Davis signature at Ferragamo. With ease and comfort in mind, the upper has been completely redesigned with two padded bands forming a knot so slipping on this timeless style.
