New Shoreditch Exhibition Charts The Glory Days of Disco
Nothing is as evocative of late 70s nightlife as a Bill Bernstein photograph. Capturing New York's diverse dance floors across legendary hotspots like Paradise Garage, Studio 54, and Better Days, Bernstein immortalised expressions of power and love through a single snapshot, seizing a moment to be fondly remembered for years to come.
Inspired by the era is club phenomenon Glitterbox, who will pray tribute to their inspiration through a curated edit of Bernstein's photography opening at the label's Shoreditch events space on 19 April. With the area including never seen before shots and a floor to ceiling print detailing the ultimate Paradise Garage backdrop, there will also be a signed special edition of Bill's book Last Dance available at the exhibition, providing true documentation of a scene that united and loved by so many.
Speaking on the occasion, Bernstein said in a statement:
‘I am incredibly excited to exhibit my photographs at Defected’s offices between 19-29th April. There’s an obvious connection between Glitterbox’s philosophy and the creative, magical and inclusive spirit of 70’sNew York. A signed special edition of my Last Dance book will be available for visitors and is a true documentation of a scene that united so many.’
Thanks to Bernstein, we will never forget disco's heyday. By continuing to talk about it, recreate it, and curate exhibitions inspired by it, it's like the much-heralded era never really went away at all.
