Nicholas Daley Releases S/S 20 Fashion Film 'Astro Black'
Menswear designer Nicholas Daley presented his Spring/Summer 2020 collection last June in London: the designs themselves and the show atmosphere raising the roof. Now, Daley has released an accompanying catwalk film to revisit the magnetic show, titled Astro Black, as the collection hits stores.
Daley established his namesake label in 2015 and has been greatly influenced by his Scottish and Jamaican heritage. His creations are also greatly inspired by the musical element running through his veins. Daley's parents were the first to open a reggae club in Edinburgh in the 70s, and so music has largely played a key part in his upbringing and now in the collections and staging of presentations.
These aspects are captured in the newly released film, which sets the show stage in an East London church. It wasn't your typical fashion show, with live music performed by the jazz group Sons of Kemet and models dancing to the upbeat tunes, making the light catch the earth-coloured garments and shiny gold accessories. It was a powerful experience to become part of and carried the feeling and essence of clothing that needs to be lived and loved in.
'The people attending were so impressed and excited by the show that they all got up and danced. It was such a rare occasion, because everyone attending fashion week are usually very serious or worried about time, but here we all got up and danced. Everyone were so in the moment and not considering what shows to get to next or what reviews they had to write. It was really beautiful,' Calum Knight, Content Editor at SHOWstudio, recalls of the energetic and joyous event.
As an emerging designer, Daley's presentation left the attendees with a clear understanding and appreciation for what he is capable of achieving. Recently, his talent has also been recognised by LVMH: he has been shortlisted for the 2020 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers to be awarded on 5 June 2020 at the Foundation Louis Vuitton.
