Recent years have seen the fashion industry scrutinised as the second largest polluter on Earth, resulting in brands coming up with innovative ideas on how to make the future more sustainable. From the high street to luxury labels, many solutions include shopping less and being more thoughtful before making a purchase. Well, Selfridges wants to turn the tables on its shoppers with the introduction of The Stock Market.
For the latest pop-up at the London retailer’s The Corner Shop, customers are invited to bring their old clothes, shoes and bags for trained experts to assess them. Looking to create a circular fashion ecosystem, customers will be able to exchange their items for store credit, breathing new life into items that would otherwise remain unused or in a landfill.
Not only that, The Corner Shop will provide customers with a number of experiences meant to encourage more sustainable practices. This includes teaming up with some of the UK’s leading sustainable fashion companies like SOJO, SneakersER, The Handbag Clinic and Vintage Threads to provide customers with bookable services like shoe repairs and bespoke upcycling.
The pop-up is part of Selfridges’ larger Worn Again event which will be promoting circular shopping experiences all summer long. Running until August, the initiative is the retailer's latest sustainability effort. Unlike their Project Earth program which promotes brands and products that utilise sustainable practices in their production, Worn Again wants to increase the number of transactions in the second-hand market. For Selfridges, this means a goal of getting 45% of transactions to come from circular products by 2030.
The Stock Market at The Corner Shop is open now until 10 June.
