One of the biggest events on the American fashion calendar took place last night, with winners announced on both home and international turf.

Hosted by actor Emily Blunt, who wore a tangy orange suit by Christopher John Rogers, the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York made a push for a new generation of American fashion talent, whilst also nodding to international stars.

'The American fashion industry has been called many things, but one thing we can agree on is that optimism and determination drive our industry,' said Tom Ford, the chairman of the American fashion body. 'Tonight was a celebration of American fashion and how the industry came together to navigate the pandemic in so many ways...There are so many reasons to feel proud, and it’s an honour to celebrate the people who make American Fashion what it is tonight'.

Rogers scooped the American Womenswear Designer of the Year award, with Emily Bode Aujla of Bode taking home the American Menswear Designer of the Year. Telfar Clemens was named American Accessories Designer of the Year for the second year running - no surprise given the undying appeal of his cult 'Bushwick Birkin' handbags and recent UGG collaboration. The Emerging Designer of the Year went to Edvin Thompson of Theophilio.

Flying in from across the pond, Demna Gvasalia collected the International Women’s Designer of the Year award for Balenciaga, with London's very own Grace Wales Bonner named International Men’s Designer of the Year.

Zendaya, who has recently been serving up Rick Owens and Loewe fresh from the S/S 22 runways for red carpet appearances gone viral, was named Fashion Icon. Actor Anya Taylor-Joy was presented with the CFDA’s first Face of the Year award.

The Positive Social Influence Award went to Sara Ziff for The Model Alliance which advocates for the rights and wellbeing of models. The Founder’s Award in honor of Eleanor Lambert was presented to Aurora James for the 15 Percent Pledge, and The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dapper Dan.

Carolyn Murphy presented Patagonia with the Environmental Sustainability Award, which was accepted by Patagonia’s District Environmental Coordinator Rebecca Goodstein. Emily Ratajkowski presented Nina Garcia with the Media Award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard. Yeohlee Teng received the Board of Directors’ Tribute, which was presented by Michael Kors.
