Women, Creativity & Commerce: Paris S/S 24 Womenswear Round-Up

published on 4 October 2023

Live from Paris, editor Hetty Mahlich rounds up the key takeaways from the Paris S/S 24 womenswear shows.

This season's overarching theme has been finding the balance between creativity and commerce. Where some brands have proven to be experts at creating saleable collections without compromising their artistry, including Jonathan Anderson at Loewe and John Galliano at Maison Margiela, others are unabashedly veering into marketability.

Both Casablanca and Balenciaga are among the biggest offenders at Paris Fashion Week for prioritising capital in favour of innovation and imagination. Other shows we reflect on include Alexander McQueen, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Ann Demeulemeester, Christian Dior and Y/Project, Comme des Garçons, Coperni, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Mugler, Nina Ricci, Peter Do, Valentino, Vaquera and Victoria Beckham.

Mahlich also tackles the lack of diversity she witnessed this season. With an increasing lack of women in top heavy roles, such as the creative director, now is the time we should be shifting away from the male-driven fantasies that dominate fashion.
