Matty Bovan’s World Of Ribbons Is Getting Its Own Book

As one of London Fashion Week’s most beloved designers, Matty Bovan has been captivating the industry with his unbridled creativity and craft-focused designs. It was only a natural progression that he would branch out into the art world with his first solo exhibition dubbed, Ribbons. Made possible as the recipient of the NOW Gallery 2022 Fashion Commission, Ribbons opened on 30 November last year as an immersive, site-specific installation at North Greenwich’s NOW Gallery. Open for three months, Bovan invites the public into a world created with, you guessed it, ribbon. Well, anyone unable to make it to London will now get to explore the designer's creative process from the comforts of home with a coffee table book of the same name.
‘This book, to me, is my most intimate, inside view of my working process, with very few people allowed into this usually, it has also harnessed the joy and excitement felt that day coming together to create this work, just friends rallying together to make something interesting. Christine has such a beautiful sensitivity to her photos, and she understands where I am coming from 100%, so I feel it translates well onto the paper, it just felt like some kind of magic was in the air that day,’ explains Bovan.
The limited edition hardback published by IDEA Books will be released on 1 March with only 100 copies being produced. Documenting Bovan’s process behind creating his woven colossal structure. Opening the tome is a forward by Sarah Mower titled 'Matty Bovan's Hand-Made World'. The Vogue fashion critic offers insight into the designer's DIY approach that makes him one of today's top talents.
Ahead of the exhibition's opening, Bovan caught up with SHOWstudio's Christina Donoghue to discuss his ideas behind the immersive piece. 'I had this idea of it changing over time, and I love the exchange idea between public and sculpture, and so we're going to invite people to tie them on wherever they want, meaning it will constantly be evolving and changing'.
