From the 50s to the 70s, it’s no secret that vintage has been a big style inspo in recent years. For this year’s BFC/GQ Designer Fashion Fund winner Nicholas Daley, decades past have always been a continued reference throughout his collections. The Scottish-Jamaican designer pulled from 70s reggae for his S/S 23 collection donned by models as well as musicians. It’s Daley’s dalliance with music and penchants for reimagining vintage styles that made him the perfect partner for a collaboration with Fender. Inspired by Fender’s new American Vintage II guitar, the capsule collection is a testament to the brand’s timeless designs while looking to the future.
'Music is part of my label’s DNA so it feels like a natural fit to work with a brand that helped elevate music as we know it. When Fender asked me to respectfully reimagine the aesthetic of American Vintage II, I couldn’t pass it up', says Daley.
The Fender-inspired designs by Daley include the designer’s signature patchwork bomber jacket and hand-printed vintage t-shirts. Keeping on the theme of revival, the bespoke designs have been screen-printed on second-hand tees breathing new life into vintage styles. After all, Fender’s American Vintage II guitar collates the defining details from models popular in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, in a guitar suited for today’s musicians.
‘Much like our American Vintage II guitars, this collection breathes new life into everlasting styles, while utilising modern techniques to meet consumer's needs. We’re thrilled to have partnered with Nicholas Daley on a first for Fender, bringing the tone of the American Vintage II series to another level,' explains Fender's vice president of global communications Christina Steljskal.
Rocking Daley's designs and shredding the American Vintage II in the capsule's campaign imagery are East London's very own Has Baker and Amy Gadiaga from Paris. While nostalgia is a powerful tool used frequently by big brands, Fender's partnership with one of London's brightest young talents and featuring emerging musicians in its campaign shows that it isn't afraid to look to the future while pulling from the past.
