With a longstanding history of collaborating together, Fred Perry and Nicholas Daley's latest collection represents the meeting of two music-focused minds in a fashion context.

Nicholas Daley and Fred Perry are no strangers to each other. Nor are they strangers to the idea of littering their collections with many musical references, once again evidenced by their latest partnership which pays homage to the British Southern soul boy scene of the 1970s, looking to the funk, soul and jazz artists that have stood the test of time.

In true Daley fashion, the menswear designer has made sure to imbue the collaborative S/S 22 capsule with references to key cultural icons of his time (including Isaac Hayes, Lonnie Liston Smith and Earth, Wind & Fire, all of whom mirrored the same liberation as their soul boy counterparts through their music and style). Also designed in a rich palette, mirroring the retro colours Daley favours in his mainline collection, various Ecru's, Milky Blue's and Navy's communicate both brands' vision. London-based artist and frequent Daley collaborator Gaurab Thakali has stepped in to create artwork exclusive to the collaboration, which features chain stitch embroidery details.

Nicholas Daley and Fred Perry's mutual encouragement of music within the fashion industry dates back to the early days of the pandemic when the pair decided to launch a music grant in support of unsigned British artists, with one lucky creative given a recording masterclass with Metropolis Studios.

For Daley, it's always been about the music as much as it is about the fashion. His S/S 19 collection was presented as a live music performance, and his following A/W 20 fashion film saw the young designer dabble in Afrofuturism, where he collaborated with South London jazz scene musicians Kwake Bass, Wu-Lu and Rago Foot. The designer's recent S/S 22 campaign was also apologetically Daley, taking inspiration from global music treasures like Richie Havens, Jo Armatrading and Davey Graham.

Considering their mutual interest and love in the intertwining of contemporary culture and traditional craftsmanship, it's no surprise that Fred Perry and Nicholas Daley have established a strong bond, one of which celebrates the various subcultures in Britain while also weaving in music and fashion references pertinent to them.
