Peter Do has become one of the Big Apple's most exciting fashion brands in recent years, redefining American luxury and ushering in the current trend of understated luxury. Winning the LVMH graduate prize and coveting stellar reviews for their runway debut in 2021, the design collective has a distinct eye for detail, whether that be pleated silk, jewel encrusted heels or signature red stitching. It's this appreciation for effortless chic which has resulted in Do's appointment as the new creative director for Helmut Lang, the New York brand founded in 1986. After all, trends always come back around.
At home on the East Coast, Do studied at FIT after growing up in Philadelphia, where he emigrated from Vietnam aged 14. Finessing his craft at Celine under Phoebe Philo, then Derek Lam, the Peter Do brand launched in 2018 - which will continue when the designer officially begins his new role on 15 May.
A pioneer of minimalist fashion, the Helmut Lang brand underpinned 90s tank tops and tailoring. In the years since, the brand has seen designers including Shayne Oliver put their own spin on it. Although we'll have to wait until September for Do's debut, expect things to go back to the roots.
'No one embodied radical thinking more definitely than Helmut Lang...I am excited to learn from the foundations this house stands on and to continue creating new, energetic clothes that inspire people to challenge their understanding of what is possible when it comes to expressing their individuality', Do says. Stay tuned.
