Towards the end of the 19th century, diplomatic relations between Japan and Peru became increasingly common as many Japanese decided to settle there. Romantic in tone, Hiromi Shimabukuro's submission 'Sakura Maru', is inspired by this emigration.
Filmed in three locations: London, Brighton and West Yorkshire - Jack Stead’s non-narrative fashion film submission ‘Inertia’ visualises his perception of the physics-related concept through creating a distorted series of moments. Forget structure, embrace chaos, for Stead, confusion is an understatement.
A fashion film in the truest sense, Sól Hansdóttir’s cinematic contribution ‘Series of Studies on the Nature of Being: The Egg’ shows off the artist’s A/W 23 collection comprised of six looks and an Egg sculpture installation made from recycled material. Eerie and slightly absurd? Maybe. A futuristic depiction of a burgeoning designer finding an alternative to the runway? Certainly.
Omid Aghdam's 'Spooky Action at Distance' visualises the unique phenomenon of Einstein's 'quantum entanglement' theory, looking at the idea of particles being supposedly linked to each other even if they're separated by long distances. Who said that quantum physics matters should stay out of fashion film?
The question 'who am I?' is one that fills many of us with existential dread. Lulu Yang's fashion film 'Ennui of No Name' pushes past this feeling of void to determine the meaning of existence, for her and the rest of mankind.
Why submit one film when you can submit six? This was Saram Han's logic when she came to us with her compilation of shorts labelled 'META ME' all which dwell on time, space, vulnerability and state of mind when an isolated ego rules.
